Medications

Dr. Pugh refilled all medications, so refill numbers have changed. The paperwork is in the Meds basket with a reminder note. The only refill I have filled on the NEW meds is the furosemide. This is noted as well. (NOTE: If meds are not refilled by Pugh during an office visit, his office charges $20 to update and call in the refill to the pharmacy. The Pharmacy can not call Pugh's office on Mom's behalf - per Pugh's policies.)

Mom is having a very difficult time swallowing the larger pills. Be prepared. Best way is to have her stick her tongue out with the water close by, you put the pill on the tongue as far back as you can get it and instruct her to drink and swallow as quickly as possible. Per Pugh, if she misses a dose or two of potassium, we do not have to panic.

**Also only at Walgreen’s, but you have to ask for it, is a dry shampoo cap – it is awesome. It costs $4.99. Maggie and I tried it and it made Mom feel very good. Also tames her fly-away hair. Maggie is going to use it once every week or two, and in between, use the dry shampoo spray. Feel free to use it anytime you want to. Probably best in the a.m. while she is sitting on the toilet. Gives her time to move her bowels.

Just one question in this group - can we cut the large pills into two pieces? And maybe use the applesauce thing that we did a while ago. I know some pills are not supposed to be cut but don't know which ones.

thx for taking on all of this work and for documenting so thoroughly for the rest of us - our family is very fortunate to have you on the case ... I have been off-line for a few days, am working to absorb all that is in your updates ... will try to find a part to play, but it is difficult from my location ... one thing that does seem obvious to me is to make the move to downstairs ... I picture H. being setup in one room only - the bedroom - with all of her stuff (chair, bed,tv moved in there, will she really be that aware of the difference most of the time? there is the noise of the air-cond. unit, that will be a problem, but there is such a benefit of getting the stairs-obstacle removed ...

I hear what you are saying about the move downstairs. Probably the biggest obstacle is H herself. I guess I think that Mom would be in the room with the fireplace, and the caregivers would have the bedroom? I agree that she would be in one room. But the likelihood of it happening? I don't know. Will take a miracle, or something just short of it.

When you are there, maybe you could bring it up to her as well....expect strong resistance.

RE: Pills. The pills are so large, that even the 1/2 pill is very difficult. More difficulty at end of day than at beginning of day (cooperation level is better). Can not crush or split Potassium pills. I did give her some Tylenol crushed in pudding once, but if we are giving her pain med, Tylenol is not necessary. I punted quite a few times on vitamin.
