Maggie asked me earlier today to help her search for airline reservations for the following dates:
12/20/07 to 01/03/08, a two week period when Jane will be here
A FEW THINGS:
1) The airfare we found was approx. $450 and Maggie said that was too much for her to pay. I'd like to contribute to her vacation in the way of an Xmas bonus and just give it to her now to support her time off. I was going to do that anyway on a personal level. ANYONE ELSE INTERESTED? I'm sure she would be grateful. Her commitment to us and Mom is incredible.
2) In terms of our "policy" with caregivers, have we agreed or are we agreeing to paying Maggie vacation? I seem to recall that this was not something that was discussed or clarified so we have an opportunity to direct the outcome here in a way. I'm for paying for at least a portion of it (one week) out of current funds. Any other thoughts? Since this will impact our funds to pay for ongoing outside care, I thought it best to get people's ideas.
3) I wanted Jane to know Maggie's plans as this will impact her, particularly if she has plans to work from here as she has in the past. Jane - I am assuming that you will need fill-in for Maggie during the day, correct?
4) I am finding it very hard to do the lifting, etc. of Mom. Maggie does not seem to have a problem. She says she is used to it. Again, I know it is hard for everyone to gauge their relative strength here, but it really is something to consider on a going forward basis, and Jane, again, what will your needs be during that time period? Day and Night support?
Thanks, All. Would love to hear from you soon in regard to Maggie's time off and any gift we'd like to make to her, and any fund support we'd like to provide.

Maggie and I discussed the vacation dates ... I expect to do all of the Maggie-related hours during that time period. Also expect to do the Gwen-related hours except for 1/2/8 which is my departure day at 10pm, but she has not been not been notified and should be if it will save us $.
I had thought that MK/Maggie discussion covered paid vacation time? not sure ...
I will be happy to contribute $100 towards Maggie plane fare as holiday bonus for her.
to point#4 - the descriptions of moving H. around sound like what I was doing when there in Sept. I am ok with the lifting as long as H. is able to stand with support ... If her condition changes to where she cannot stand in that transition from sitting-chair to Hugo-chair and 100% of the effort is the caregiver, then unsure about my ability to do that without risk to H. (e.g., slipping, skin tears from chair bumps,etc.). So, not sure what to say at this point in time about that time in the future since it depends on H. abilities.
We're happy to contribute to the airfare, and cover any shortage if there is any, so please go ahead and tell her we'd all like to pay for this for her.
When Maggie and I discussed the care plan, she said she didn't expect to get paid for any time off that she took. Since she mentioned it first, I just agreed so I'd be surprised if she expected to get paid for vacation time.
That said, and with this recent deterioration, I don't have a problem paying her for some vacation time. We could leave it open and then just pay her a bonus when the time comes or we could tell her now. I'd probably opt for a bonus.
Thanks very much! I'm going to move forward to say that we will buy her plane ticket for her as a Xmas bonus. I'll see who else answers and go from there. I also am willing to take care of any shortfall, so I'll be in touch with final figures. Will write it out of my account and then let you all know.
I'll leave well enough alone as to the vacation pay. I just couldn't remember what was finally determined.
Jane - Since you have already experienced a level of immobility, I think you will be OK. She is still supporting herself to an extent. She is not dead weight. Only time it gets a little dicier is bed time when she is weaker in general and her resolve has gone.
